Flags at Half Mast?

Well, I can't figure it out. Flags have been flying at half mast for something like a month now. Is this all still just for Reagan? If so, man, that's a long time. And how many of our boys have died in Iraq in the meantime? Reagan was an interesting president to be sure - flamboyant, controversial, gave us Reaganomics and all sorts of other bizarre legacies, but it seems odd to keep flags down for a month for the death of a president who wasn't in office at the time. If he'd been assasinated I could see it. But we've been expecting him to die for years. He had Alzheimer's Disease. His death wasn't a big shock.

Anyway, I'm just confused. I'm wondering if I'm missing something. And wondering how long this is planning to go on.

  • July 5th should have been the last day. Presidents get 30 days at half-mast, regardless of whether they were good or bad, in office or retired, assassinated or died of old age. Vice-presidents and governors get 10 days, and it goes down from there.

I think people aren't paying much attention now, and are continuing to raise the flag to half-mast because they see everyone else doing it.

Sounds like a job for the post-it brigade.

  • Um, so I guess that Nixon didn't get it because he resigned? I mean, he was president. He just stopped being president. Anyway, he sure didn't get a 30 day stint.

  • Nixon should have gotten 30 days at half-mast when he died, but not when he resigned. I don't remember if people did at the time or not.

  • 30 days? I guess that confirms it. The warehouse across the street (Anheuser-Bush is our neighbor. yay) only just stopped flying their flag out front at half mast. I'd been wondering if it was for Reagan after all this time.

  • It's not Reagan they're mourning. It's the official death of the 80s. Makes ya wanna cry. ;)

  • As an Australian I found the circus associated with Reagan's funeral to be very bizarre. Flying his body back and forward across the country with poor old Nancy having to tag along. I suppose in about 30 years time there will be 30 days of mourning for George Dubya. I wonder how he will be remembered?
