Fire Update

It was definitely an electrical fire. Rick took pictures. I don't think they've come to terms with the idea that they can't live there anymore. They did not have homeowner's insurance. They best thing they could do would be to sell the land and move on to somewhere less expensive to live - Fresno or Turlock or somesuch. But I don't think they're thinking about it rationally. Or possibly don't have the capacity to do so. Right now I'm worried that they may try to do some minimal work and move back in. Oh, and I've called an electrician. I hope to have some work done on our house in the next 30 days. I couldn't sleep last night. I fear electricity.

  • Losing a house can be a shock. It may take them some time to figure out what to do next. It's horribly sad especially if they don't have homeowner's insurance.

  • Wow. I can't imagine owning a house without insurance. That's going to be just plain ugly for them. I think you're right...sell the lot and get out.

  • I didn;t think a bank would give you a loan if you didn't have insurance. Did they pay off the house and then drop the insurance ?

  • I share Chris' question. I didn't think you could own a house without insurance - unless you owned it outright. And who in the bay area can actually pay off a house?

  • Ah, sorry. Posted back to just Chris on that. You can own a house without homeowner's insurance. In fact, only those that truly own their home can ever do that. For you see, they've lived there 45 years, and the mortgage was long since paid off.
