Two Turtle Doves

Well, actually, probably not turtle doves, but doves nonetheless, nesting right outside my office window. Doves are not stealthy birds. They fly away with a little clucking trill every time they come and go. They're building their nest atop the circuit box out my window. They've been fussing at it for two days now. Soon I expect eggs and later perhaps chicks. Here's hoping everything goes well for the happy couple.

  • Ahh, they're almost certainly mourning doves. Do they have a little black mark on their cheek/neck?

Yeah, the eggs should be there already if they're taking turns on the nest. They only nest when raising chicks. They lay two eggs at a time, and they hatch about 14 days later. The chicks fledge after another two weeks, before which they'll be so ugly they're adorable.

After they leave the nest they'll still be around for a few days on the ground, learning to fly. This is when they're most vulnerable.

    Have fun with yours!
