Color Research

Colors are one of those things I've always wondered about. Is my perception of blue the same as your perception of blue? Or if I were looking through your eyes or using your brain, would it be totally different? So much of color perception is relative. If I had a bazillion dollars and never had to work, this is one of those weird things I might go study.

Lucky for me, other people are doing the research for me. Today's interesting research article is about infant perception of color and how it differs from color perception after language acquisition.

  • There has been a lot of research done on cross-cultural perception of colors related to the words that a language has for different colors. Russian has a different word for light blue and dark blue and native Russian speakers perceive more definition between shades of blue. What we call blue the Japanese call another shade of green, hence they are slower to perceive shade differences in that range. Interesting stuff.

  • Your house, which you describe as 'very blue' struck me as not so blue as I expected. I thought of 'very blue' as a darker blue, whereas your house came across as light blue.
