God, Please Save Me From Your Followers

There are a few things that just make me sit back and say, "Dude, seriously?!" The Galileo Was Wrong web page and conference is all there.

Yes, this is an extreme example, but there are plenty of other less extreme examples of religious groups willfully ignoring observable, demonstrable phenomena and insisting that what is written down in their little book of fables is the only source for fact.

At least the actual Catholic church is starting to reverse it's 2003 position that condoms do not prevent the spread of HIV. (But still, using them for birth control would be a sin. Sigh. Do they make money running orphanages or what?)

  • I can't speak to the Catholic position, but that "Galileo was Wrong" website is so absurd it's embarrassing! Believe it or not, it *is* possible for science and the Bible to not be at odds with each other. For some reading from actual intelligent scientists who are also Christians, check out http://www.reasons.org.

If the Bible is true, then insofar as they overlap they will agree. Of course, as theology and scientific discovery/understanding are both processes, it is to be expected that they don't always agree now, but patience and objective study and observation eventually reconcile the differences as was the case with heliocentrism vs. geocentrism.

That said, the purposes of science and religion and different, and we get in trouble when we try to make either address topics they were never meant to address.
